Fun fact: If you Google which animal is the year of 2023, it's the Rabbit (Thổ) for most countries that follow the Lunar calendar. But for Vietnam, 2023 is the year of the Cat (Quý Mão).
Tết is around the corner. This year, the first day of Lunar New Year falls on Sunday, January 22nd, but for the Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam, as it often doesn't fall on a weekend, Tết can and are usually celebrated on any convenient days close to the real date.
It's the time of year to show your appreciation and affection for family, friends, teachers and coworkers and people you care about. In Vietnam, people usually get 6-10 days off for Tet. It is usually a customs in Vietnam that you visit close families on the first couple days of the holiday, then teachers, friends and coworkers on the other days. It is also a customs that you only say positive things, words of good luck to the people you meet during this time.
In this article, I want to share with you some Tet wishes that you can use to say to your family members, to your friends, your teachers and coworkers. If you live in a Vietnamese community or if you are friends with Vietnamese people, it might be a good idea to send them these good wishes to show that you care about them.
So, here we go. A selection of Vietnamese New Year wishes categorized into family, friends, teachers and coworkers. Please understand that my translations are not great, but I try to convey all the meanings in there for you to understand.
Vietnamese new year wishes to say to grandparents
(ông = grandpa, bà = grandma)
Chúc ông bà phúc như đông hải, thọ tỷ nam sơn.
Wishing you have as much luck as the sea water and live as long as the (number of bamboo trees) on the mountain of Nam Son.
Chúc ông bà năm mới bốn mùa mạnh khoẻ, quanh năm sung túc an vui.

There are many ways to send well wishes to Vietnamese people for Tet holidays. You can say it directly to them during a Tet event or gathering, you can send them a postcard, you can also send them a red envelope with some lucky money and include a note with the wishes in there.
